Before you can do this, you'll have to get the Ice Beam. Once you have it, go to the pirate base in Phendrana. When you get to the room
with the Thermal Visor (Research Core), go through the white door to end up in
Frozen Pike; go get the Gravity Suit as you would normally do! Now you can go the back way to the
Quarantine Cave where you fight Thardus, or you can just go to Phazon Mines and
screw around there, although you won't be able to progress once you get to Ore
Processing.
Thardus' body will still be lifeless when you enter the Quarantine Cave from the
back, probably because the fight isn't triggered to happen until you step near
the front entrance. You can scan him before the battle and walk into him and
take damage, maybe even go to Quarantine Monitor somehow.
The Ice Beam just bounces off of Thardus, but it does kill those rocks in one
uncharged shot on either difficulty. Still, this trick has great value in speed
runs, and there's just something funny about seeing Samus wearing the Gravity
Suit in the cutscenes with Thardus. Your graphic in morph ball form is also that
of the Power/Varia Suit until you pick up the Spider Ball.
