Don't be afraid, this technique is ridiculously easy. It will be very helpful if you attempt to skip the grapple beam or if you have to do jumps that require precise landing.
In fact, to lock your view, you only have to hold the L button. To lock your view down, just look down (using the R button) then release the joystick and the R button and press R. Your view should be locked there and you can move around freely. Voila!
It is not confirmed yet, but I think you get a little more height from your jumps when your view is locked. Not sure...
