Boss Tricks: Metroid Prime Second Form

Notes:
- The Metroid Prime essence usually takes four phazon pools to defeat, but with a trick to get more use out of each one, you can finish the fight long before the fourth pool is even made (and when done well enough, as soon as the third pool is made). Any and 100 percent speed runs get the most mileage out of this method, due to having the charge beam and thermal visor.
- The start is no different, just wait at the back of the room for the first pool (the side opposite of MP's shell). After the cutscene, lock on and step in it while holding A. Step back out of the pool when you touch the edge; all you need is to be in long enough that you trigger the hyper mode. Repeat this about 6 or 7 times, but on the last time, stay in the pool and drain it completely. As long as you have the charge beam, holding A activates the phazon beam whenever you step in the pool, so don't worry about doing it on your own.
- After the pool disappears, go to the back of the room again and wait for the thermal pool. There should be a little time to glance at MP's health bar and see how you did (switch to combat visor if you're having trouble seeing it in detail). If his health is at the "p" in Prime, you took off about a third of it. Repeat what you did with the x-ray pool, then wait for the next one after it's been completely drained.
- Once the third pool is made, it's up to you how to use it, depending on what you want. If you did enough damage with the first two pools, you can simply enter and drain it right away, and still do enough damage to kill MP. If you try this and end up not doing enough damage, he'll live to the fourth pool, and you'll have saved very little time with this method. You can also use the pool trick until you think you can finish him by draining it, but the longer you wait, the more time you lose.
Additional info:
- It's possible to use MP's remaining health to decide whether you can kill him by draining the third pool instantly. If you didn't do enough damage with the first two, it's very likely that he'll live with a sliver of health left; sometimes this amount is so little that he dies on the next pool with one tap of the A button. Aside from reading MP's health bar, the only thing I know that's worked so far is never attempting it if fission metroids don't spawn with the third pool.
- Remember that MP doesn't make a pool at all if he's too close to his shell when changing spectra, and whenever that happens, you lose about 45 seconds waiting for the next pool. Unlike the normal method, using the pool trick requires you to stay by the pool until you're done with it. The pool is sometimes close to his shell, and when it is, this method can be very risky.
- In the PAL version, MP has more health, and we aren't yet sure if the last pool can be drained right away like it can in NTSC. The pool trick can still be used to kill him in one less pool, however (five instead of the usual six; see the lower left video).
- In low percent games without the charge beam, you have to repeatedly press A to use the phazon beam, and this seems to make the pool trick less effective. Without the thermal visor, you also don't get to lock on during the thermal pool, making it very hard to do any real damage to MP. A three pool fight has never been done in low percent games that lack both items, but the trick does make it a lot easier to win in four pools (see the lower right video).
